A Latin American Myth

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
The story of the Monkey's New Drum comes from a Latin American collection of tales and myths. This particular story comes from Panama and is based on a trickster tale. Not only is a good read, it also teaches kids several Spanish words with a glossary included on the last page.

The monkey, Reynaldo, likes to brag and wants to be popular - but with the way he treats the other animals, they don't like him much at all. He wants to have a party and he thinks everyone will come if he can get Juani the tortoise's shell as a drum. So the two animals have a race to see who will win the shell.

This book does seem like a typical tortoise and the hare type tale, but it has an extra twist at the end that shows kids that even if someone isn't very nice to you that it doesn't mean that you should sink to their level. In fact, the story encourages kids to help others understand that kindness will get you farther in life.
