With the story 'David Smells!', I found that I enjoyed this book much more once my daughter became a toddler and I discovered how truly gross, loud, and crazy little kids can be.
When I first got the book Harper was my precious little do-no-harm angel, and I couldn't relate to the gross things that David does in the book such as eat a bug covered lollypop or having his dad asking him if he is stinky with a grin on his face. But now that she is older and has eaten a few bugs of her own, I think the book makes parents smile and kids chuckle. You can go over the top with the voices and both you and the child seem to think, "Ha! I've been there!"
I think the best thing about this book is the illustration. It's very different as you can see from the cover. I would guess that a lot of people probably wouldn't like the art, thinking it was just 'messy', but if you really look there is a lot of detail in the coloring and I think it's really what draws you to the book in the first place.
