A story from Europe
|
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
This story (which I think may be an English children's song because there is no real 'author' of the book listed anywhere) is interesting to have in our collection because it's a fun little sing-song type story and some of the words that we would typically use are substituted for the common European term. For instance, the man with the delivery truck is picking up parcels instead of packages. I think this is a great way to expand a child's vocabulary and introduce them to how other people in the world might be different then them, but still has a similar community.

An exciting counting book
|

This counting book by Jan and Stan Berenstain is really well done. It's a counting book that actually don't mind reading more than once! It follows all types of Berenstain bears (not the Mama, Papa, Sister, Brother bunch - but probably some of their friends) riding different types of vehicles with wheels. From a unicycle to a car to a tricycle; and leaping bears, dropping bears and crashing bears; you get to count both the bears and the wheels they are riding on. The book adds a little kick to the typical counting book by giving the bears a little personality without even needing them to speak just through the illustrations and action on the page. This could be a quick read or if you wanted, made a longer story by counting out all the bears and wheels on each page as you go. I think this book is a good example of how you can make even the most basic concept book into a fun and interesting story. |

A cute Pooh story
|

I thought that this story, "Pooh: The Grand and Wonderful Day" was a lovely, short Winnie the Pooh story that really got the character of Pooh across in the story. Pooh wakes up and knows that something wonderful is supposed to happen on this day - but he can't remember what it is. So he goes looking for help from his friends to try to figure out what it was supposed to be. He goes from curiosity, surprise, worry, fear, and anxiety - but in a way that isn't scary and is understandable for young kids. The illustrations are Disney quality and had lots of nice color and detail. |

This is the best you could come up with?

This book by Mimi (why she has no last name I don't really know) is just plain boring. It's the story of a little boy and his pets doing all the things that you are not supposed to do with a pot. (ie sit in it, play in it, etc) But the story is actually kind of confusing. They don't really explain that the narrator is.... I guess... being sarcastic? Eh, that's not even the right word. The whole story is telling you not to do stuff with this pot and at the end it says, "Why not?" Maybe it's just me, but for the age group that this is aimed at, I don't think they would get what the author is trying to say. The illustrations were not great and a lot of times showed the little boy doing something he really SHOULDN'T be doing with the pot, like stand on it or try to roll on it like a barrel. I don't really recommend this book to anyone. |

Great basic concepts from Dr. Seuss
|

Dr. Seuss teaches kids not only about their letters - but the types of sound they make! For example, "Big R, little r - Rosy Robin Ross! Rosy's going riding on her red rhinoceros."This is a good book for learning about letters and the pictures are classic Dr. Seuss - but for me, it's just a little too long. My little girl gets squirmy and wants to get down after about the letter J. But I do love his other stuff! |

I remember reading this series as a child

I remember really enjoying these Little Critter books when I was a kid. They have very, very cute pictures and all the books have tiny little repeating themes like the little spider that follows him through every book. This book follows Little Critter as he tries to find someone to play with, but all the grown ups are busy. Being a typical (I'm guessing) 2nd grader he wants nothing to do with the little sister that is following him around trying to get him to play with her. Even though the main lesson of the story is that sometimes you can overlook the obvious solution - it also shows Little Critter playing on his own for a while each time before looking for a new playmate. |

I love the Backyardigans, BUT.....
|

Okay I LOVE the Backyardigans television show. I think the music is great, it makes me and my daughter laugh, and is a really well done kids show. But turning the episodes into books? It just doesn't work. The illustrations are good - they are basically the same as the tv show and the flaps are fun for kids. There is also a lot of metallic foil in the pictures which add a little bit of spark to the book. But without getting the great music from the show and more dialogue, the story is just confusing and weird. |

Beautiful, fun poems & beautiful watercolors
|
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
This book of children's poems is very well put together with over 50 contributing poets. The poems are sweet, funny, goofy, serious and just an all together good mix. The watercolor painting illustrations by Kady MacDonald Denton are beautiful and really add to the poems on each page. I know that a lot of parents don't buy their kids books of poetry other than maybe mother goose - but I have found that poetry books make great bedtime stories and really help with a child's vocabulary because they use such a lot of descriptive language. |

Okay, but not much Spanish really
|
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful
This book of poetry is a good idea in theory, mixing English and Spanish into one book so kids can get the idea that there are people out there that speak differently then they do. But the poems themselves are fairly uninspired and in order to even know what some of the Spanish words they add in you have to flip to the glossary in the back of the book. Somehow I thought that with poetry, the description should be clear enough that you should get the idea of what the word is even if you don't know exactly what it is. I do have to give it credit for the beautiful chalk illustrations by Enrique O. Sanchez. |

This was my pregnancy bible!
|
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful
I am posting a picture of the 4th addition of this book because I believe that it is very important for expectant mothers to get the most up to date information they possibly can. I personally had a copy of the 3rd edition two years ago when my daughter was born - but I can tell you right now that if I were to get pregnant today I would go out and buy this updated copy and just transfer over any notes I made in the old version! This book has a great month by month guide to your pregnancy and is written out mostly in the question and answer format. I think that is a PERFECT way to do this! I can glance through questions and see exactly the information I am looking for. Because if someone were to hand me a 600+ page book about pregnancy that was just written like normal chapters, then you could bet it would still be up on a shelf somewhere gathering dust!! |
