A good book, but not why you would think

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
This is probably the very first book that my daughter laughed out loud at. Blue Hat, Green Hat is a basic concept book about colors and clothing, but has one very funny turkey inside.

Each of the characters first puts on a red hat, a blue hat, a green hat, etc - but when you get to the turkey character, he always has it wrong. His hat is on his feet or his pants are on his head, and while it does help learn about colors and how to put your clothes on, it also teaches kids about humor. By the fourth animal they know what they are expected to do with the clothes, so when the turkey pops up with his shirt on his behind, the kids know it's wrong and find it silly.

So maybe after reading this to your one year old a few times you can come in his room with socks on your hands and he will think you are the funniest guy since Grover came along.

Another sing-song book by Boynton

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
I don't have all of Sandra Boynton's books yet - but I think as long as I keep finding them for good discount prices at places like Marshalls and Ross, I probably will eventually.

She is one of a handful of writers that I have seen that can actually bring a little spark to the basic concept book. Down at it's base this is really just a "What sound does the animal make?" type story, but if you switch it around a little, and add a little beat - it becomes a song that your kids will want to sing over and over.

Another thing that is great about this book is that with the always cute Boynton illustrations and the sing-songy nature of the book, you can get a few more years of reading out of it once your kids already know what noises animals make.

Better get your barking voice out!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
Doggies by Sandra Boynton is a basic concept book that starts with one big yellow dog with a big "WOOF!". The story continues on adding all different kinds of dogs with all different voices. The pictures are classic Boynton and just as cute as can be, and while I am not a huge fan of counting books that have no story other than just numbers on the page, this book kind of makes up a story all it's own.

When I read this book I like to really get into the voices and try to get them all different - so this may not be the best 'take to the doctors office to keep the kids busy' type of story.

A cute special effects story

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
Rainbow Dash is a little pony with a long flowing mane of hair in pink, yellow and green. And with this story, you get to style it!

This medium size book has an attached lock of hair about 6 inches long and, when in a pony tail, about the width of a middle finger. Each page has Dash going to visit a different friends house playing different games of make believe that had something to do with a hairstyle (ballerinas have buns, cowgirls have braids, etc).

The concept is cute - but is probably geared towards older girls who would be interested in things like hairstyles. The story really just revolves around the hair and the ability to actually play with it. There isn't much of a story, but we do have another similar version of this book, My Little Pony: Pinkie Pie's Pretty Hair Day that has a little bit more of a story and less centered just around the hair.

I sing it often

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
This is a very cute book by Sandra Boynton about a mother dog who makes up a story for her little puppy about how much she loves him. The lyrics of the song are very simple and easy to remember, but it took me about 5 reads to figure out how the tune was supposed to go because it is not really obvious.

I've found myself singing the song to my daughter sometimes when we are just playing around or getting her dressed for bed, but because the song is so short and easy - I really hardly ever actually read the book to her anymore.

I also had a little bit of a problem with a few of Sandra Boynton's board books - they are made as board books so that little hands could look at them without tearing pages, so why would you put a cutout in the cover? All of the books I have that feature this get bent up and sad looking very quickly.

A great lesson in kindness

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful
I've loved the story Sleeping Ugly since my mom found it for us when I was about 14. Yes, my sister and I were probably too old for children's books by then - but the story was so funny and had such a great moral, that she couldn't help but pick it up at the bookstore.

The story starts with a very beautiful princess that is mean in every way. From kicking cats to telling lies, this beautiful princess was an awful person inside. Then one day she goes for a ride in the woods and gets lost. She stumbles apon an old fairy and together they run into the cottage of Plain Jane, a very sweet, but homely, girl who lives in the forest alone.

The story continues and starts to revolve around three wishes that the fairy gives out. In the end we learn that you need to look at things from every angle and that none of us are perfect.

I think this is a great book for pre-teen girls who might be dealing with self-esteem issues. The heroine of the story, Plain Jane, may not be pretty as a princess - but she is kind, helpful, sweet, and friendly and that kind of attitude pays off in the long run.

One of my favorites

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful
This is one of my very favorite children's books. I heard my sister read, 'I Love You, Stinky Face' to her two kids when we were visiting them on vacation and I immediately went to the book store and bought it when we got home.

The story is about a mom and son talking about what she would do if he were ever to turn into a big scary ape, or a one-eyed monster. No matter what he throws his moms direction she reassures him that she would love him even if she had to do gross things like filling his lunch box with spiders and ants. It's a sweet story of unconditional love without being too sappy.

The illustrations are colorful and fun - but not really exceptional. I do like the fact that, at least in the board book version, the art covers all the pages leaving no white space. That's not always a good thing - but for this artist it works.

A Classic

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
This is a classic story first published in 1942. Even if you haven't read this one, you probably recognize the artwork from Margaret Wise Browns companion stories - 'My World' and 'Goodnight Moon'. According to the publisher it has been so popular over the years that it has never been out of print.

I think this is a great bedtime book. It has a nice back and forth pace that creates a nice rhythm to lull a child to sleep. The story has a mother rabbit telling her son that even if he runs away she will follow him anywhere he goes no matter what he pretends to become (ie: a fish, a bird, a flower). In the end he decides that whatever reason he had for wanting to leave wasn't as important as his desire to stay with the mommy who loves him so much.

The illustrations in this book are half black and white ink sketch, and half bright painting. They give a very soft, dreamlike state to the book. My personal favorite is when the mother tells her bunny that, "If you become a bird and fly away from me, I will be the tree that you come home to." - and the picture is of a big green rabbit shaped tree with a tiny pink and white winged bunny flying to it.

It's a great classic that almost everyone seems to enjoy in my house.

Interesting Illustrations

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
With the story 'David Smells!', I found that I enjoyed this book much more once my daughter became a toddler and I discovered how truly gross, loud, and crazy little kids can be.
When I first got the book Harper was my precious little do-no-harm angel, and I couldn't relate to the gross things that David does in the book such as eat a bug covered lollypop or having his dad asking him if he is stinky with a grin on his face. But now that she is older and has eaten a few bugs of her own, I think the book makes parents smile and kids chuckle. You can go over the top with the voices and both you and the child seem to think, "Ha! I've been there!"
I think the best thing about this book is the illustration. It's very different as you can see from the cover. I would guess that a lot of people probably wouldn't like the art, thinking it was just 'messy', but if you really look there is a lot of detail in the coloring and I think it's really what draws you to the book in the first place.
