A Very Fascinating Story for Mature Readers

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
This is a really good period piece book that tells the story of a German family who hides a Jewish friend in their basement during Nazi Germany in WWII. The central character is a young girl, whose mother is forced to give her and her brother (who dies in the beginning of the story) to foster parents before disappearing herself, presumably for suspicion of being a Communist. That description alone tells you it's a little heavy on subject matter out of the gate, so definitely for older teens. The story is very interestingly told from the narrative perspective of Death, who oddly enough seems to have a poets way with words when it comes to describing the world as it sees it. Despite the pretty grim themes, there is a lot of warm moments and small triumphs, and all in all it's a very touching and compelling story that should appeal to both boys and girls.

A Must for Florida Teens

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
A staple for Florida kids, but a fantastic good clean adventure story for teens from anywhere. Definitely covers some fairly serious ground, so it's geared towards older teens, but nothing really shocking. The characters are all very believable and grow to identify with them and care about their plight. A good adventure story with positive figures that won't bore your teen.

Fun Offbeat Book

Definitely liked the illustrations, my daughter (3) really found them interesting and liked pointing out the little things that made her laugh. The story was very different, not at all what I expected and took some completely surprising turns, especially at the end. Kind of reminded me of a Shel Silverstein plot. I almost felt like it ended in a cliff hanger of sorts, and I wonder if there were plans for a followup or series. All in all, my little girl kept wanting to read it over again and I stay amused, so definitely a worthwhile addition to your kid's library.

Gripping Story for Older Kids

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
I thought this was an incredible book that to be honest would be an excellent read for adults as well as teens. There are some pretty grown up concepts in this book such as oppression, poverty, exploitation, and violence. It's all handled well with all of the protagonist having a solid moral compass, but it would only be suitable for mature readers who have already discussed these topics with adults. The book's heroine Katniss is a very strong and independent female with solid values. There is a lot of action, but plenty of thought provoking content as well. The violence is realistic and not glamorized, but it is a story about a battle to the death in a wilderness arena of about 2 dozen teens with only hand weapons. It's the first of a planned series of 3 books that will likely be fairly successful.

Harry Potter Like Adventure

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
If you are familiar with the Harry Potter series this story will be very familiar to you. The central themes of discovering a world just under the surface of fantasy, adventure and peril are one in the same. However, there is enough uniqueness here to make it a fairly unpredictable action-filled read and Potter fans will like this book very much. There is a good bit of time spent discussing Greek mythology, enough to qualify as educational, and the author definitely felt it was important to have done his homework here as I'm sure any Sociology teacher would give this book a thumbs up. The action is pretty non-stop and there is a budding romance story (very tame but will obviously be developed across the series) so it would likely appeal to a wide audience of middle and high schoolers, girls and boys alike. An all around fun read, fairly educational on mythology, but nothing really groundbreaking from a literary standpoint.

Great Book for Kids Who Like The Outdoors

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
Kids who like getting muddy, playing in the outdoors, and swimming holes will relate well to the Tom Sawyer-esque adventure and fun portrayed in this book. It's the story of a little boy who starts out grumpy and pre-disposed about the tourists who descend on his little marsh/beach town every summer. To get away he goes off to play in the swamp and ends up reluctantly making friends with the summerfolk kids, learning they aren't so different after all. Teaches well the lesson of not making assumptions about people before you get to know them. Illustrations are pretty entertaining and lend a lot to the fun and adventure that builds as Willy meets each new friend.
